Healthy Hair Care Tips For Back-to-school

If you’re headed to school this fall, it’s a good time to get a haircut, color, and stock up on your favorite hair care products before you leave. If you get into the habit now with a good haircare routine, it’ll be easier to do when life really gets hectic with classes, social engagements, friends, and all the fun things you’ll experience. A good routine is essential to keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy in between breaks when you can make it back into Parisian Salon & Day Spa.

It's all too easy in college to take the ‘laid back’ approach when it comes to hair, makeup, and fashion – especially since most days you’ll be doing your best just to get to class on time. Your hair can start to suffer in the excitement and stress of life. We’ve put together some tips to help you stay on track when it comes to keeping your hair looking and feeling its best.

Let heat styling take a backseat. While it’s important to look good at your potential sorority, college party, or hanging out with your friends, you don’t have to heat style your hair every day for class. Messy buns, ponytails, and twists can be good hairstyles for weekly classes to both get you to class on time but also to give your hair a break from the excessive heat of styling tools. Over-styling causes dry, brittle hair, split ends, and weak hair that can break easily. When heat styling is a must, be sure to first use Park Ave Blow Out Balm to protect your hair against heat styling while sealing in moisture to add nourishment, improve manageability, and increase strength.

Shampoo less, condition frequently. Living in the dorms may make you feel like you need to wash your hair often, but you don’t. Overwashing your hair makes it dry, unmanageable, and frizzy because the shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils. When you do wash, maybe 2-3 days a week, use KMS Moist Repair Shampoo to replenish moisture, restore your hair’s natural protective coating, reduce breakage, and repair damage. Condition often with KMS Moist Repair Conditioner to keep your hair nourished, feeling soft, and looking its best. If your hair is feeling oily or dirty in between shampoos, try a dry shampoo like Spiritualized Dry Shampoo to refresh and revitalize your hair. Same rule – don’t overdo the shampoo.

Brush carefully when wet. Your hair is most delicate when wet, so R+CO Detangling Brush or R+CO Comb can stop breakage and split ends. Never brush harshly to get those tangles out and when you’re ready to blow dry and style, using one of our rounded brushes will ensure that the heat is distributed evenly through the hair while leaving your hair shiny, tangle-free, and healthy-looking. Using a professional brush will reduce the stress on your hair and scalp.

Don’t use heated styling tools on wet hair. Please listen! There’s nothing worse than hearing your hair sizzle and ‘fry’ on a heated tool because you’re in a rush. Using a flat iron or curling wand on wet hair will scorch your hair causing damage from the root to the tip resulting in severe breakage. If you’re late and don’t have time to completely dry before styling, try adding a styling mousse and put your hair in a braid, low bun, or loose ponytail.

Take the time to keep your hair healthy. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money keeping your hair healthy in between salon visits. Treat your hair weekly to Television Perfect Hair Masque or a deep conditioner to boost the nourishment to your hair while leaving it silky-soft, frizz-free, and healthy. Before you leave for school, you’ll want to make sure you have your favorite hair oils, serums, mousse, and sprays for easy styling while keeping it healthy and strong.

Don’t pull hair back tightly. While putting your hair up might become a staple during your busy morning, pulling your hair too tightly into a bun or pony can lead to hair loss and breakage. Try leaving your hair down whenever possible, in a loose braid, or messy bun to give your hair a much-needed, stress-free rest.

Trim your hair regularly. It’s easy to get caught up in the business of school but taking time for regular trims is important to the health of your hair. It will keep your split ends to a minimum which helps keep your hair healthy and free from frizz. Before you leave, make an appointment with your favorite Parisian stylist and make it a point to get regular trims as you can.

Clean your styling tools. It’s normal for roommates and besties to share. They share food, shoes, makeup, clothes, and even styling tools and brushes. Unfortunately, styling tools and brushes can collect dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria. When you share, make sure to clean your tools and brushes before using them again.
